Inspired by Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata

Some musical compositions evoke places that exist only in the deepest part of our soul. For Carlos, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata is one of those.
This painting is the translation of the artist’s emotional experience hearing this beautiful yet mysterious composition from music notes to colors and light. It reflects the quiet tension, melancholy and wonder that he hears in the sonata. The solitary traveler, the distant ruins, the winding river and the luminous horizon are visual echoes of emotions that unfold as the music progresses. The invisible light source just outside of the frame evokes the possibilities of the unknown.

The title, Azimuth, refers to a bearing or direction of travel. It suggests that the most important aspect of a journey is not always the destination itself, but the orientation of the traveler—the decision to turn toward something beyond the horizon.

Like music does, this painting aims to leave room for the viewer to complete the story in their own way. Each of us carries our own memories, longings and hopes into both music and art. If this painting succeeds, it is because it allows the viewer’s personal experience of the sonata to fulfill its meaning.
